WOODCARVING
OVERVIEW:
The woodcarvers of the Andros draw their influences from their West African
and Seminole Indian heritage. The native woods, only cut from dead trees,
are some of the best in the world. Students will carve beside legendary
carver Henry Wallace and hear testimony to his deep appreciation for
the marine environment. The marine shapes and forms will be explained
in detail by resident naturalists in this adventurous course.

FIBER SCULPTURE OVERVIEW:
Straw works have been made in the Bahamas
by the original Lucayan Indians and since the settlement
of African slaves. The people of Andros have traditionally
made vessels of palm needle-sewn basketry that is coil woven
over stripped strands. There are several styles of basketry
on the island, influenced by the waves of migration from
Africa and the Carolinas. Master Artists William (Scrap-Iron)Colebrooke
and Annie Colebrooke will work directly with students to
explore the rich history of fiber manipulation and traditional
Bahamian living.

BOAT
BUILDING OVERVIEW:
The island history of Andros is a sea tale
of forgotten boats and fisheries. Sponging, conching, and
fishing have long been the primary occupation of maritime
peoples. Though fiberglass has replaced the traditional
wooden vessel, there are a few remaining master craftsmen
who build using the traditional Caribbean method. They
will assist artists in the construction of their forms
while passing down old tales of wrecking, fishing sponging,
and sailing. A restored Bahamian Sloop will be on-site
for group sailing instruction.
