About the Residency:
Maritime Arts and Inspiration Center (MAIC) is
part of International Field Studies, a 38 year old non-profit
educational organization located on Andros Island in the
Bahamas. MAIC residencies serve as a platform for artistic
exchange between international artists and the master carvers,
fiber artists, and boat builders native to Andros. MAIC
is based in a renovated school house and operates year-round
with a variety of educational programming. Artist Residencies
at MAIC are offered periodically for one or two week sessions
with the purpose of bringing together a group of professional
artists who can engage with the island as a group, while
furthering their independent creative efforts.

How MAIC Works:
Residencies are offered in a one week and two

per session. Artists are invited to submit applications
twice a year. The applications are reviewed and ranked
by a panel of artists and arts professionals.
In order to offset basic operational costs, MAIC residents are required
to pay a fee that covers round-trip travel from Ft. Lauderdale, food,
and outdoor work and living accommodations.
A Green Residency:
MAIC is committed to celebrate the rich cultural history
of Andros without any unnecessary environmental impacts. The
center focuses on exciting alternative energy strategies, such
as solar and wind produced electricity, passive solar hot water
shower, a bio fueled 36ft sailboat, and composting toilet. MAIC
is an inspiring rural ocean program that requires no experience
but a willingness to be immersed in the natural environment and
rustic accommodations.
Important Information:
The Maritime Arts and Inspiration Center is
a natural product. The intent is to immerse the artist
in the natural wonders of wind, sun, coral reefs and
forests. There are seasonal rains, insects and exposures
that are not typical of the built environment. Andros
is an vast outdoor experience not to be missed.
